Considering a senior move in renewable energy? How to approach it

For Directors, VPs and C-suite leaders in solar, storage and transmission, the best moves are rarely advertised. How to approach your next step with confidence.

Considering a senior move in renewable energy? How to approach it

Most senior roles in renewable energy are never advertised. Companies hiring a VP of Development, a Director of Engineering or a CFO usually prefer a confidential search, and the people they want are generally already employed and doing well. If you are a senior leader thinking about your next move, that changes how you should approach it.

Know what you want from the next role

Before any conversations start, be clear on what would make a move worthwhile. Common reasons include:

  • A bigger remit, such as moving from regional to national responsibility, or from one technology to several.
  • A different stage of company, whether that is a growth-stage developer or a large IPP with an operating fleet.
  • Equity or long-term incentives that reflect the value you create.
  • A portfolio you believe will actually get built.

Being specific helps a recruiter bring you the right opportunities and helps you say no to the wrong ones quickly.

Keep your profile current, quietly

You do not need to announce that you are looking. A clear LinkedIn profile that reflects your scope, markets and the scale of projects you have delivered makes it easier for the right people to find you. Keep a short, up-to-date resume ready too, so you can move quickly when something interesting comes up.

Talk about outcomes, not just responsibilities

Senior hiring decisions come down to evidence. Be ready to talk about:

  • The projects you took from early development to notice to proceed, financing or operation.
  • The teams you built and how they performed.
  • Difficult situations, such as a failed interconnection position or a financing that nearly fell through, and what you did.

Do your own due diligence

A good process works both ways. Ask about the pipeline and how much of it is realistic, the financing strategy, the board or sponsor's expectations and why the role is open. A credible employer will be happy to answer.

Work with a specialist

A recruiter who knows the renewable energy market can tell you which companies are growing, how your experience is likely to be valued and what a realistic package looks like, all in confidence. You stay in control of who sees your details and when.
